• What led you to start your agency?
I wanted to create work for myself and for other trans people that struggle within the fashion industry. Simply put the fashion world is not as inclusive as it could be. At the same time, with the increase of visibility of trans people in the media, I felt there was an opportunity, a moment of ripeness, to inject something new into the industry.
• There weren't any transgender models featured in Spring 2016 ad campaigns. Does that surprise you?
There was a trans model that featured in Diesel Spring 2016 ad campaigns. I'm surprised nobody mentioned her name. I've been a fan of Nicola Formichetti work, and he is a creative director behind this campaign. He knows how to capture a millennial audience. And Barneys has Spring 2016 ads that photographed LGBTQ people at LGBT Center NY. So while not ideal or even acceptable amount, we were represented.
> Caitlyn Jenner has taken on a role as the face of H&M Sport, and models like Hari Nef, Lea T, and Andreja Pejic are rising in popularity both on and off the runway. Do you see this as signs of great things to come?
Yes, I do and also L'Oréal Paris hired Brazillian transgender model who came out as trans during her first International Woman's day. I'd love to see the models in my agency signed a beauty ad campaign. I especially want to see more Asian trans women be the face of a beauty campaign.
> How can the fashion industry make a better effort at recognizing transgender women and men, as well as providing them with more opportunity for representation?
The bar as far as I am concerned was set by photographer Bruce Weber and Dennis Freeman, creative director at Barney's. Together they launched Barney's trans-centered 2014 spring ad campaign. They hired 17 transmen, transwomen to model. I like to see more of such innovative and courageous campaigns.
Which models/celebrities/social disruptors are you most excited about this year?
Bernie Sanders. I'm inspired by his vision for the United States. Education, social, economic, and political. He is someone who anchored in principles, has a moral compass, vision and ability to bring that vision to fruition.
What exciting endeavors does your agency have coming up this year?
We recently began collaborating with Just A Minute! Productions, an award-winning Production company. They have worked with VOGUE.com, STYLE.com, among others. We are looking forward to creating great content together with them.
Any other thoughts on diversity
Diversity is both external and internal. Our goal is change not on the visible landscape of the fashion world, but also to help people recognize the multitudes that they contain within. Trans Models represent both types of diversity.
